In about 1850 Joseph Evans Sr came to Brighton,NY from Somerset,England. He worked hard to establish a hardy and prosperous farm. He saved and skimped to bring over the love of his life, Anne England.
It is said that he had spent all of his money on the farm, farm house and passage. He could not afford a 'proper wedding and ring.'
He reportedly was beside himself for having nothing ...bent down and picked up two squares nail and pounded them into rings as symbols to remember their hard work and sacrifice. Nails that held their home together'
I drove by the Evans Farm today. Their farm is still a prosperous and a desirable neighborhood.
Their home still stands.
