Today Alex played Church Basketball.
We went early and I got to see my nephew play, Nathan. I have been meaning to get there and watch him, so I am glad. Wow Nathan has grown.
It was a tight game between the two teams. One kid on the opposing team of Nathan's had been hard on others, Chad in particular.
Finally in the last seconds on the game Chad, who had taken the brunt of the "pressure" and in my view unsportsmanship of the opposing team, pushed him into the wall.
OMGsh the drama unfolded.
This boy was to be a varsity player, a star, and yet there he laid in writhing pain. Screaming and screaming rolling around screaming.
One parent got up and was YELLING at Chad a 'jerk' in his face.DIDN'T BOTHER HELPING...JUST STARTED YELLING.
Another Man started calling him "Mormon hypocrite." The Ref literally had to forcefully sit these parents down....while this boy just laid there screaming as people came to him.
I just went and got ice, then towels, and I went to my car to get ibprophen.
Some girls of the injured boy's Ward started crying and hugging each other. I swear they wanted to have a candle vigil.
Mothers were running around getting all the Priesthood holders possible.
There was a nurse there. She said there wasn't even any swelling…. which is a great sign.
When I went to the car, there were more girls crying and hugging outside and I said.
"Oh Brother he is fine- he is getting a blessing- so just stop the drama and go in and support him."
It is very interesting to see how people react.
Oh BTW - our ward won and it was cute to see Alex, Ryan and Liam set up the younger kids to be able to make baskets.

HA!!
this post made my day.
o the memories of church ball.
i will never forget the time I got kicked out of the game..being the oldest on the team..and yet the older team had major players and were creaming out little guys..i had to take things into my own hand..they were playing dirty and saying things on the court.. so i clocked her one..remember mariana..the girl with the nose job..haha.. and then all i remember is uncle carl saying..hit her again! haha.. oo church ball is so much dirty then other sports..haha
oo good times.
some one said there was a movie about it
yeah i think there is...and i know that when i was up in town..they had stuff about it at the book store..they have a actual "church ball" that is a basketball and shirts and stuff.
Your description of "the whole drama" is hilarious!
Dang, and here I thought church ballers the world over were some of the toughest people to ever live. Church ball where I grew up was just street ball indoors with a ref that didn't get a whole lot of use out of his whistle.
I kneed a guy right in the face once. He just gave me a dirty look and we continued (no blood, no foul). But it could not be ignored when I cursed at the top of my lungs, dropping the "S" word at middle court. I got a warning from the ref and we carried on.
Although, and you'll like this, one of my teammates got kicked out one game for refusing to cease arguing with the ref. His mother got up and screamed, "Come on! We'll write a letter to the general authorities... CHURCH BALL SUCKS!!!"
That was perhaps the most spiritual experience of my life... in a strange sort of way.
hah! Heather you crack me up. Good 'ol church ball.
Stu- just as long as you don't cuss, it'll be all right, lol. Too funny.
